The Dalziel and Pascoe novels are not only an enjoyable read but also thought provoking. In his books Reginald Hill explores contemporary issues as wide ranging as feminism through to the state of the coal industry in Yorkshire. Pascoe's wife Ellie with her socialist perspective is the perfect foil for Dalziel's more right wing political outlook.

Many of the early Dalziel and Pascoe books have been dramatized by the BBC. Three series starring Warren Clarke as Dalziel and Colin Buchanan as Pascoe are currently available for purchase on DVD.
