Whitcoulls Top 50 Kids Books for 2013-2014 List

Whitcoulls Kids’ Top 50 Kids Books of 2013-2014 was recently announced.by Whitcoulls. The annual list is compiled from voters within New Zealand who are asked to name their top three children's books.

2. The Hunger Games series Suzanne Collins
3. The Fault In Our Stars John Green
4. The Mortal Instruments series Cassandra Clare
5. Hairy Maclary and Friends series Lynley Dodd

The 2013-2014 top spot went to J K Rowling’s Harry Potter series which edged out the 2012-2013 winner, The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins.

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green achieved third place ahead of The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare in fourth spot.

This year's list contains ten New Zealand titles. The most popular New Zealand book in the list is the Hairy Maclary and Friends series by Lynley Dodd followed by Mark and Rowan Sommerset’s Baa Baa Smart Sheep at number nine and Craig Smith’s The Wonky Donkey in 11th place.

Whitcoulls book manager Joan Mackenzie says "it’s great to see Kiwi authors with so many books in the New Zealand top 50".

"Titles such as I Need a New Bum, Bad Dog Flash, The Little Yellow Digger, The Looky Book and A Bigger Digger are all great read" she said.

Eleven new titles turned up on the list this year including newcomers like The Ranger’s Apprentice series of books by Australian author John Flanagan.

Many kids classics feature in the Top 50 list including J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia and six books by popular author Roald Dahl. .

Whitcoulls Top 20 Authors List 2014-2015

When Whitcoulls canvassed New Zealanders to find out what their Top 100 books for 2014-2015 were they also published a list of New Zealand's Top 20 Authors. To find out which authors were selected read on. Jodi Picoult, author of such compelling books as My Sister's Keeper, The Pact and The Storyteller was voted New Zealand's favourite author for 2014-2015. In an interesting twist she narrowly edged out J. K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series. These results may reflect the age of the voters as Jodi Picoult is most popular among women who are by far the largest demographic of book buyers. Other fiction writers who made it to the list in the crime and thriller genre were Lee Child, Dan Brown and James Patterson. Most popular Sci-Fi & Fantasy authors were George R. R. Martin, J R. R.
