Although the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling continues to claim the top spot garnering the most votes this year's list still has a few surprises in store. For a start there are 15 new titles on the list and at least a quarter of the placegetters are from New Zealand authors. Book series dominate the list indicating that kids still love to binge read books from their favourite authors.

Another interesting development is the emergence this year of books that tackle children's emotional well-being. There are several books in the Top 5 aimed at helping kids understand their feelings: the Aroha Series and How Do I Feel? A Dictionary of Emotions by Craig Phillips and Rebekah Lipp are both on this theme.

Whitcoulls Top 20 Authors List 2014-2015

When Whitcoulls canvassed New Zealanders to find out what their Top 100 books for 2014-2015 were they also published a list of New Zealand's Top 20 Authors. To find out which authors were selected read on. Jodi Picoult, author of such compelling books as My Sister's Keeper, The Pact and The Storyteller was voted New Zealand's favourite author for 2014-2015. In an interesting twist she narrowly edged out J. K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series. These results may reflect the age of the voters as Jodi Picoult is most popular among women who are by far the largest demographic of book buyers. Other fiction writers who made it to the list in the crime and thriller genre were Lee Child, Dan Brown and James Patterson. Most popular Sci-Fi & Fantasy authors were George R. R. Martin, J R. R.
