Whitcoulls Bookshop have recently announced a new Whitcoulls Top 100 Books List for 2010 as voted by New Zealand readers. This year has some surprises in store with some additions, some omissions and a change to the number 1 position after some years.
What a surprise to see the Lord of the Rings Trilogy toppled after 12 years in the number 1 slot on the list. To add insult to injury Tolkein's 'Lord of the Rings' Trilogy has been relegated to sixth place. While Stephanie Meyer's Twilight saga has assumed second spot and Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveller's Wife has leapt from 14th place to third.
Fortunately the new series by Steig Larsson The Millenium Trilogy which begins with the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo followed by Girl Who Played With Fire and ends with the Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest is a worthy replacement to LOTR.
Surprisingly some very popular books dropped off this latest Whitcoulls Top 100 books list. Two bestsellers in this category are: The God Of Small Things by Arundhati Roy and The Shipping News by E Annie Proulx.
Meanwhile best loved classics like Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights and Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre all still ranked on the list (at 7th, 53rd and 72nd place respectively).
More modern classics are also holding their own as can be seen by Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird at #9 and J D Salinger’s Catcher In The Rye at #59.
More recent best books such as Jung Chang’s Wild Swans at #58 and Sebastian Faulks Birdsong at #68 remain popular. The same goes for The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold at #10, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hollows by J K Rowling at #11, The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown at #14 and Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt at #56.
