Whitcoulls Top 100 Books List 2017-2018 Readers Choice

The Whitcoulls Top 100 Books List for 2017-2018 as voted by New Zealand readers who submitted their favourite reads and top fiction choices is out now. Not suprisingly the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling, a firm favourite with adult and youth readers alike garnered first spot. Read on to find out more about what fiction books New Zealanders enjoyed the most in 2017.

Classics which featured highly in the line up in previous years have taken a bit of a back seat to more modern fiction this year. Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien faired best in 6th place while Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice only made it to 11th place and 1984 by George Orwell came in at 15.

Historical fiction appears to be gaining a foothold in the list with The Lilac Girls, The Book Thief and The Bronze Horseman all reaching a place in the top 10 books. The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon which has a huge fan base in New Zealand was rated 7th. A Song of Fire and Ice by George R. R. Martin is ranked at 8th place perhaps partly due to the popularity of the Game of Thrones TV series.

It is interesting to note that Jodi Picoult features heavily on this Top 100 books list with 6 novels represented proving perhaps that she is one of the most influential writers in the English language today.
