The Affair Lee Child Jack Reacher Series #16 Review

The Affair by Lee Child, the 16th book in the Jack Reacher series of thrillers hit the shelves of bookstores in 2012. What's different about The Affair is that it does not follow on from the events in his previous Jack Reacher thriller Worth Dying For but rather is a prequel which in the timeline of Jack Reacher covers the period prior to the first book Killing Floor.

Plot Summary of The Affair by Lee Child #16 Jack Reacher Series

The Affair is the prequel to Killing Floor, the first book in the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child which is good news for new readers to the Reacher series who can start with this book rather than having to begin in chronological order.

The Affair is set in March 1997, six months before the events of Killing Floor. Jack Reacher is still in the army. And there's big trouble in a small town in Mississippi, where a soldier's girlfriend is found with her throat cut from ear to ear. Local trouble? Or is the killer from nearby Fort Kelham, a giant base used by elite Army Rangers? Reacher's orders: go undercover, keep your distance, monitor the investigation.

The local sheriff is Elizabeth Deveraux, a beautiful woman and an ex-Marine MP. She has all the skills she needs, but she's making no progress. Why not? Is there a reason she doesn't want the killer identified? And there's constant pressure from the Pentagon, too.

Shadowy figures from the world of politics want the killer unmasked - but only if he's a civilian. Any other result would be a catastrophe. Reacher and Deveraux can't get near the base. There's a shadow force in the woods, enforcing a quarantine zone around the fence. But side by side they piece together the evidence - and their partnership becomes more than professional.

Eventually the army's official investigation produces a cast-iron prime suspect - and so does Reacher's undercover search. But Reacher's answer is not the same as the army's. If he keeps quiet, will he be able to live with himself? And if he speaks out, will the army be able to live with him?

What Order to Read The Affair by Lee Child

The Affair is book #15 in the Jack Reacher series but does not necessarily have to be read in sequence as it is a prequel to the Killing Floor, Lee Child's first Jack Reacher book. The storyline in the book takes place 6 months before the events in the Killing Floor.

If you are a seasoned veteran of Lee Child books then you could read any others you have stacking up and skip The Affair until you are all caught up.

If you have never read a Jack Reacher thriller before you could actually start with The Affair and then move on to the first book Killing Floor.

Is The Affair by Lee Child a Good Book?

The Affair is one of the strongest Lee Child Jack Reacher books. Good Reads rates it at 4.1/5 stars. The Affair deals with the reasons that Jack Reacher's career with the US Army was terminated back in 1997. As a novel it combines a good mix of storytelling, mystery, action and a sizeable slice of romance for good measure.
