A list of Whitcoulls Kids’ Top 50 Books of 2012-2013 compiled from thousands of votes was announced recently. The list is an eclectic mix of youth fiction and picture books that makes a useful reference for gift buying and for those parents wanting to encourage their children to read. In the number one position in 2012-2013 is The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins, a trilogy featuring Katniss a strong young female main character in a dystopian world. The Hunger Games is also proving popular with adult readers which may help to explain its rise from number 5 on the 2011-2012 list to number one this year.

The second spot went to the much loved Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling while The Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney was third.

Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy by New Zealander writer Lynley Dodd took out fourth spot. Other New Zealand books included The Wonky Donkey by Craig Smith in seventh place and The Little Yellow Digger by Betty and Alan Gilderdale in 29th place.

The list confirms that Roald Dahl books remain popular among kids with The Twits ,The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda all being placed in the top 20 books.
