There was not much reshuffling of the top places this year. The Millennium series by Stieg Larsson held onto the number one spot for the second year in a row with the hugely popular Game of Thrones series by George R R Martin a close second. The timeless modern classic The Lord of the Rings by J R R Tolkien took out the third position. A surprise newcomer to the Whitcoulls Top 100 list is The Fault in Our Stars by John Green which rocketed to 7th place on the list.

Novels by both Jodi Picoult and Paullina Simons proved extremely popular with voters this year. Jodi Picoult was New Zealand readers most popular author with five entries featuring on the list including My Sister's Keeper, The Storyteller, Lone Wolf, The Pact and House Rules. Likewise popular novels by Paullina Simons including The Bronze Horseman, Tully, and The Girl in Times Square were selected by readers as favourites.
