Plot Summary of Mortal Remains by Kathy Reichs (Book 13 Tempe Brennan)

John Lowery was declared dead in 1968 - the victim of a Huey crash in Vietnam, his body buried long ago in North Carolina. Four decades later, Temperance Brennan is called to the scene of a drowning in Hemmingford, Quebec. The victim appears to have died while in the midst of a bizarre sexual practice. The corpse is later identified as John Lowery. But how could Lowery have died twice, and how did an American soldier end up in Canada?

Tempe sets off for the answer, exhuming Lowery's grave in North Carolina and taking the remains to Hawaii for reanalysis - to the headquarters of JPAC, the U.S. military's Joint POW/ MIA Accounting Command, which strives to recover Americans who have died in past conflicts. In Hawaii, Tempe is joined by her colleague and ex-lover Detective Andrew Ryan (how 'ex' is he?) and by her daughter, who is recovering from her own tragic loss. Soon another set of remains is located, with Lowery's dog tags tangled among them. Three bodies - all identified as Lowery.

And then Tempe is contacted by Hadley Perry, Honolulu's flamboyant medical examiner, who needs help identifying the remains of an adolescent boy found offshore. Was he the victim of a shark attack? Or something much more sinister?

Reading Order of Mortal Remains (aka Spider Bones)

Virtually all of Kathy Reichs books in the Temperance Brennan series can be read as stand alone novels and Mortal Remains is no exception. However, if you are attempting the series for the first time though, it is probably better to start with her earlier books in the series: #1 Déjà Dead and #2 Death du Jour.

If you are already well acquainted with Kathy Reichs books by all means go ahead and enjoy this one. Also look out for First Bones (2020), an e-novella prequel that explores life in the 1980's when Temperance Brennan is a newly employed bioarchaeologist, studying the bones of the ancient dead.

Is Mortal Remains (aka Spider Bones) Worth Reading?

Mortal Remains scores 3.92/5 on Google Reads thus placing it as a popular book with readers.

What to Expect

With a background in forensics Kathy Reichs has a lot of knowledge and experience to call on for her mystery novels. Sometimes though her descriptions of procedures and tests can be a tad too complex and involved for the average lay person.

If you are looking for interesting and in-depth characterization then Kathy Reichs is probably not the best author to choose. If you want a well-written thriller underpinned by science then you can't go too far wrong with Kathy Reichs's Mortal Remains.
